Yes, we lost.
But we still had fun!
The first half of the game we were lagging a bit, but we were still having fun. One of our big problems – other than the fact that half the team can't shoot – was that we weren't getting any rebounds.
At about halftime, Hanif showed up and started running over the Free Agents. It was awesome! He was definitely the player of the game, helping us by getting rebounds and really putting us back on the board.
Joanne made two baskets, Erin made a basket or two, and Tiffany did about the same. Tiffany also fouled the female player on the Free Agents. Awesome.
We were pretty proud to go from getting 26 points to getting 42 points in a game. Our goal for the next game is to get 50 points, but we'll see.
This week we'll play team No Mercy, who is 3-0, at 9 pm. We have practice tonight in the East Gym in the PE building, not sure who all will show up. So far it's just Tiffany and Chay. We'll keep you posted on how practice goes and the results of Wednesday night's game.
The Simpsons teammates Chay, Tracy, Erin, Tiffany and Danny practiced Monday night in the dark. We originally attempted to practice in the East Gym in the PE building, but staff closed it down. The West Gym was completely full with multiple basketball teams practicing, along with a volleyball team in the back. Chay suggested we try the courts by the swimming pool, which are outdoors and not lit. We headed over there and played a two-on-two game under dim lighting from the pool area and surrounding buildings; Tracy and Tiffany vs. Erin and Danny. We had a good practice - shorter than last Monday's practice but still worthwhile, even though it was definitely dark. Hopefully next Monday we'll have a lit area to practice.
Erin and Tiffany agreed that we need to practice dribbling. Tiffany really needs to work on layups. We're all stoked for this week's game against the #3 Free Agents team at 9 p.m. We're looking to make up for last week's forfeit with a win.
We've also added Hanif Zarrabi to the team. He is an assistant city editor and contributing writer for the op/ed section of the paper. We're so excited to have him on the team!
Also, Joanne Tucker, the news editor, will play with us this Wednesday because her early-morning class on Thursday has been canceled. Thanks for coming out to help the team Joanne!
Unfortunately, our team had to forfeit our game against the Ancient Fighting Irish on Wednesday night due to the extensive work a number of editors put into the online voting policy story for the print version of the Daily Forty-Niner. Our next game is on Wednesday, March 18 against the Free Agents #3.
Tracy's brother should be around to take photos for that game. We'll post the results of that game by Thursday.
Monday we had a great practice that lasted about an hour and a half. Chay, Tracy, Danny, Erin and Tiffany worked hard on shooting and passing. Tiffany is still a terrible shooter, but she plays a mean defense. Erin played bball years ago, and it all came back to her when she stepped on the court. Danny and Tiffany played against Tracy and Erin in a scrimmage to 10 points. Tracy and Erin dominated. Tiffany had to step out and let Chay play for a while because she turned purple again. After a couple weeks of basketball, we're all going to be in shape. Tracy felt tired after about 20 minutes of practice, and so did Tiffany and Erin. The two women were red in the face by the end of the practice. Tracy complained Tuesday morning that his thighs hurt, and thinks that he's still going to be sore Wednesday. Tiffany wore heels to school Tuesday, somehow.
We have our game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. against the Ancient Fighting Irish, who, according to Chay, only scored 19 points in their game last week against the Big Kids. This means we have a much higher chance of winning! We're expecting Chay, Danny, Mike, Erin, Tracy, Tiffany and Colleen to kick some Ancient Fighting Irish butt! Tracy's brother will take photos, so we'll post those Wednesday night along with the recap of the game.
Also, Chay's friend Jon Guevra decided to leave the team. He said he was too competitive, and by the tone he set in the last game he probably belongs on a more competitive team anyway.
Daily Forty-Niner staff photo editor Chay Chhuon decided to put together an intramural basketball team. Much like communism, it was better in theory. We had our first practice on Monday, and it was Chay, Tiffany and Colleen running -- and some dancing -- around in the Phys Ed building and occasionally shooting for about 20 minutes. Once the smoke in Colleen's lungs cleared, she was able to keep going and spent a little longer working with Chay. Today was our first game - and the first time we've played together. This game we had Chay the ninja, Disco Queen Colleen, Jon the fierce competitor, Fly Boy Danny, Inside-Out Mike and Tiffany in yo' face mother-watch your mouth! We played Team Swag, the reigning champions. We got killed. But it was a fun experience and now we actually know what we've gotten ourselves into although we should have probably gotten ourselves into the "for shadoobie and giggles league" instead of the "WE MUST WIN NOW" league. Tracy watched this game, and he got some pretty entertaining photos of our game.
We'll be posting recaps of our practices and games on here weekly. Enjoy!
